Madonna Loses Adoption Bid
3 April 2009 5:15 AM, PDT
Pop superstar Madonna has failed in her bid to adopt a second child from Malawi.
The singer has spent the past week in the country, filing court papers on
Monday asking to be granted an interim adoption of four-year-old Mercy James.
But the star's attempt to welcome a second Malawian child into her family
were met with hostility from human rights groups and childrens' charities in
the African nation.
Madonna's legal returned to the country's High Court in the capital, Lilongwe,
for a hearing on Friday to find out whether she would be allowed to take the
tot back to the U.S. with her.
But the judge overseeing the case has ruled against her, meaning she will
have to leave Mercy behind in Malawi.
Judge Esmie Chondo told the court, "I must have to decline to grant the
application to Madonna."
The application was reportedly rejected because of a requirement that prospective
parents be resident in the country for 18 to 24 months prior to an adoption.
It is not clear whether Madonna intends to appeal against the decision.
The Holiday hitmaker adopted her son David Banda, three, from the country
in 2006 but the arrangement was not finalised until 2008 following two years
of legal wrangling.
Australian Effects Company Denies Wolverine Leak
3 April 2009 5:15 AM, PDT
Officials at an Australian visual effects company have denied responsibility
for the leak of the new X-Men prequel, which found its way onto the Internet
this week (beg30Mar09) - a month before it is due to hit cinemas.
Bosses at the 20th Century Fox film studio were furious when a full-length
print of X-Men Origins: Wolverine began appearing illegally on websites on
Tuesday night.
Studio executives took immediate action to remove the Hugh Jackman picture
from the web, vowing to force prosecution on the culprit.
And attention subsequently turned to Aussie special effects firm Rising Sun
Pictures, whose company logo appears in a caption a few minutes into the leaked
copy.
But Rising Sun chairman and co-founder Tony Clark has now come forward to
distance his company from the Internet mishap, insisting that although his
employees did work on the picture, it is not possible for them to put the entire
content online.
He says in a statement, "As we worked on individual sequences within
the film, neither Rising Sun Pictures or its staff members have ever been in
possession of a full-length version, so it would have been impossible for the
movie to have been leaked from here."
Detectives at America's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are currently
looking into the case.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine is due for release in May.
Foxx Recovering After Hotel Drama
3 April 2009 12:50 AM, PDT
Jamie Foxx has assured fans he is fine after a man tried to force his way into
the actor's Philadelphia hotel room.
Foxx was forced to overpower 49-year-old Willie Brown, who pretended he was
Beyonce Knowles' producer, when he attempted to push his way into the star's
room at Pennsylvania city's Aka Hotel on 22 March.
Brown fled but was caught by cops on Tuesday when members of Foxx's security
spotted him near the hotel and alerted the police.
TMZ.com claims Brown was arrested for burglary, criminal threats, stalking,
false imprisonment and harassment.
Foxx was shaken by the incident, but insists he is recovering well after the
traumatic experience.
He tells Access Hollywood, “I can’t talk about it, because we’re still dealing
with it on the legal side.
"But I’m good now. Shout out to Philadelphia and the mayor and everybody
else to make sure it’s good."
Lost Bosses Eat Humble Pie
3 April 2009 12:10 PM, PDT
Lost TV bosses were forced to apologise to actress Rebecca Mader after blaming
her for an error on the hit show.
Fans of the cult series flooded the internet with complaints after a recent
flashback scene showed Mader's character Charlotte Staples Lewis in the 1970s
- because a previous show had listed her date of birth as 1979.
According to the National Enquirer, Lost bosses Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof
recorded a podcast shortly afterwards, in which they blamed Mader for the mistake.
The enraged actress struck back with a posting on her Facebook page, which
allegedly read, "I just wanted to say that I Never changed my age on the
set of Lost as Damon and Carlton accused me of on the most recent Lost podcast.
"Charlotte Lewis was Always meant to be 28 and born in 1979.
"They made a mistake. They are making it My fault. Not Cool."
Castmates feared the 29-year-old old Brit's outburst would jeopardise her
job, but instead it forced an apology from Cuse and Lindelof.
They have now issued a statement that reads, "Rebecca is absolutely right
and we apologize to both her and the entire fan community for screwing up the
story. The mistake was Ours. Our first mistake was the timeline gaffe, but
the much more significant one was wrapping Rebecca up in this when she had
nothing to do with it. Not her fault on any level. It was our bad. One hundred
percent."
Li Named Goodwill Ambassador
3 April 2009 12:10 PM, PDT
Chinese action star Jet Li has been selected as a United Nations (U.N.) Goodwill
Ambassador to work on key health issues.
The actor has been hailed for his community work by the U.N.'s World Health
Organisation (WHO) Director General Margaret Chan, who has cited his commitment
to helping others as a "great asset" to the organisation.
The Beijing native founded his charity the One Foundation, which aims to help
victims of natural disasters, after his family had a brush with death in the
2004 Asian tsunami.
Li says: "If we do not take care of our bodies, we will not be able to
do many things. This is our common belief, and I will do my very best to spread
this shared belief to the world."
A spokesperson for the Who adds, "Jet Li is expected to use his worldwide
celebrity to raise attention on key health issues including public health responses
to emergencies and mental health."
Li will attend the launch of the World Health Day in Beijing on 7 April in
his new capacity for Who.
Efron Leaves Footloose For The 'Unknown'
3 April 2009 12:10 PM, PDT
High School Musical star Zac Efron pulled out of the movie remake of Footloose
because he wants to take his career into the "unknown".
The 21-year old actor was slated to take on the role made famous by Kevin
Bacon in a contemporary remake of the 1984 original, but pulled out of the
movie musical last month.
He's since lined up a starring role in a cryptic new drama called The Death
and Life of Charlie St. Cloud - about a caretaker at a cemetery who has weekly
meetings with the ghost of his deceased younger brother.
And Efron has now revealed the reason behind his decision to withdraw from
the song and dance revival.
He tells Entertainment Weekly, "I'm sure Footloose would have been a
huge challenge, but the actors that I love and the actors that work really
hard in this industry are always shaking things up, trying new genres, acquiring
new skill sets. That's what's always going to appeal to me: the unknown."
Demi Moore's online response to an allegedly suicidal woman on a social networking
website helped spark an intervention by California police.
A message on Twitter.com from a user named SandieGuy read: "Getting a
knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it
doesn't waste time."
Moore responded to the graphic posting on Friday: "Hope you are joking," and
later discovered her reply had led legions of her followers to place calls
into the San Jose Police Department for help.
A spokesperson for the police department has confirmed authorities "did
locate the subject", who had not hurt herself and was taken in for medical
evaluation, reports blogger Perez Hilton.
Moore later added: "Everyone I was very torn about responding or retweeting
that woman's post but felt uncomfortable just letting it go...
"Thanks everyone for reaching out to the San Jose Pd i am told they are
aware and no need to call anymore. I do not know this woman…. And if it is
a joke it is not funny and nor is this an approriate (sic) outlet for such
a serious matter Time for us to move on."
Madonna Appeals Adoption Ruling
3 April 2009 12:10 PM, PDT
Madonna has filed an appeal in Malawi's High Court challenging a judge's ruling
that prevents her from adopting a second child from the African country.
The singer was denied her request for an interim adoption of four-year-old
Mercy James on Friday, five days after making her application official.
The bid was reportedly rejected because of a requirement that prospective
parents be resident in the country for 18 to 24 months prior to an adoption.
But the 50-year-old is determined to fight the ruling and lodged an appeal
in the capital city of Lilongwe, just hours after her application was turned
down.
Madonna's lawyer Alan Chinula says, "I just filed the notice of appeal
this afternoon on instructions from my client."
The star's bid to add James, whose 18-year-old mother died days after childbirth,
to her family and take her to the U.S. has not been without controversy - the
move was met with hostility from human rights groups, who insisted the tot
should remain in her homeland.
The Holiday hitmaker adopted her son David Banda, three, from the country
in 2006 but the arrangement was not finalised until 2008 following two years
of legal wrangling.
She also has an eight-year-old son, Rocco, with ex-husband Guy Ritchie, and
a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship.
Kumar Facing Police Inquiry Over Fashion Show Stunt
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is in trouble with police in India after authorities
received a complaint of "obscenity" following his appearance at
a recent fashion show.
The star, who recently performed alongside Kylie Minogue in new movie Blue,
is a brand ambassador for Levi's Unbuttoned range of jeans and took to the
catwalk at a show in Mumbai on Monday to promote the collection.
But during his turn on the runway, Kumar sparked controversy by walking towards
his wife, Twinkle, who was sitting in the front row, and asked her to unbutton
his jeans.
The stunt has caused outrage in the conservative country and police are now
set to investigate the matter after an official complaint was lodged with the
city's authorities.
Senior Police Inspector S.G. Nekalikar, from the Vakola police force, says, "At
present, we are investigating whether a case can be filed in this matter or
not. After preliminary inquiry, we will see whom we can file the case against."
Kumar has now apologised for his behaviour, adding in a statement, "If
I have hurt anyone's sentiments with my actions, I'm sorry because I didn't
mean to."
Elba Lands Anti-Crime Ambassador Role
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
The Wire star Idris Elba is giving back to the British charity that helped
to kick start his acting career by becoming an anti-crime ambassador for
the organisation.
The London-born actor has been chosen as a spokesman for U.K.-based charity
the Prince's Trust, which was set up by British royal Charles, Prince of Wales.
Elba credits the youth-focused organisation for launching his career - he
won a $2,175 (£1,500) grant from the trust as a teenager, which paid for his
place at the National Youth Music Theatre.
And he "jumped at the chance" to help the charity steer young people
away from a life of law-breaking because his role in crime drama The Wire helps
him to relate to the troubles facing today's youths.
He says, "The underlying issues of The Wire are not a million miles from
what British kids are dealing with today. The show is recognised for its realistic
portrayal of urban life where kids hang around on corners with nothing to do.
"They are hand-picked by gangsters that offer them quick money for dirty
jobs - this is very similar to the gang and drug culture emerging in some of
the U.K.'s biggest cities."
Spelling To Create Children's Clothing Line
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
Actress Tori Spelling is eyeing a new career - she's signed a deal to develop
a children's clothing line.
The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star has been inspired by her own kids, two-year-old
Liam and 10-month-old Stella with husband Dean McDermott, to branch out into
the fashion industry.
The clothing line will be called Little Maven by Tori Spelling.
Spelling tells People.com, "I’ve always loved fashion. It’s one of my
big passions in life. When I had kids I knew I wanted to use my flair for style
to make stylish yet comfortable clothing for my children. Liam and Stella inspired
me to make stylish yet accessible clothing for infants, toddlers, and children.
“The comfort (and) functionality factor really influences the styles I include
in my collection. I pay close attention to what styles and materials Liam and
Stella feel most comfortable in, and then I add the stylish element."
Seth Rogen is relieved his promotional duties for animated film Monsters Vs.
Aliens are over - because he no longer has to hide his hatred of children.
The 26-year-old comedian cringes at the thought of having his own kids, and
admits he wasn't impressed when his adult fans started bringing their tots
to his movie screenings and meet-and-greets - because he can't relate to them.
The new movie debuted atop the U.S. box office last weekend (27-29Mar09) with
earnings of $59.3 million (£40.6 million), and Rogen is breathing a sigh of
relief - because he can finally declare his disdain for youngsters.
He muses, "Kids like me but when they meet me they're horrified by me...
These guys bring their kids (to screenings) and I kind of resent them. To me
it's kind of a sacrilegious thing and the kid would cry. It was horrible...
"Now that the movie's out and I don't have to promote it anymore, I can
say that I hate children. It's out, it's made $60 million (£41.1 million).
I can say it: I hate kids. If no kid ever came up to me, I would be more than
happy."
Wood Not Attached To Spider-man Musical
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
Theatre director Julie Taymor has dismissed rumours Evan Rachel Wood has been
signed up to star in her new Broadway show Spider-man: Turn Off The Dark
- after issuing a casting call for all leading roles.
The Wrestler actress has been widely tipped to portray the superhero's love
interest, Mary Jane, when the musical, featuring tracks by U2 stars Bono and
The Edge, hits the New York stage next year.
But Taymor appears to be seeking a cast of unknowns for the comic book adaptation.
The casting announcement reads, "Spider-Man is seeking principals and
understudies for the roles of Peter Parker, Mary Jane and Female Lead Villain."
Auditions will be held across the U.S. from 9 April to 27 May with stops in
Orlando, Florida; Los Angeles; Seattle, Washington; Chicago, Illinois; Austin,
Texas, and the Big Apple, reports industry paper Daily Variety.
Michelle Obama Offered 30 Rock Role
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
Alec Baldwin is desperate to land a very special guest for his hit comedy 30
Rock - he's hoping to entice U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama to make an appearance
on the show.
The actor wants the wife of President Barack Obama to follow in the footsteps
of celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Aniston and Jerry Seinfeld by
featuring on the sitcom.
He tells Hollyscoop.com, "I would like Michelle Obama on 30 Rock. The
President is on TV every day, all day. So we want to get something different."
And Baldwin has already come up with the perfect storyline for Obama - he
sees her as a potential love interest for his character, Jack Donaghy.
He adds, "I think my character falls in love with Michelle Obama, of
course. You know, if it doesn’t work out with Barack…”
Fonda Vows Not To Reunite With Turner
3 April 2009 9:05 AM, PDT
Jane Fonda has vowed never to reignite her love affair with ex-husband Ted
Turner, even though she still has "feelings" for the media mogul.
The two have remained friendly since their 2001 divorce, with Turner even
attending Tuesday night's performance of Fonda's Broadway show, 33 Variations,
to pledge his support for the star.
And although the actress admits they still share a deep connection, Fonda
insists their relationship will never again be anything more than platonic.
She tells the New York Post, "It was fun to see Ted... He's so funny
and sweet. It makes me happy that we still have feelings for each other - although
I couldn't go back to being the wife or even mistress again."
Geldof Slams 'Lecherous' Westwick
3 April 2009 5:15 AM, PDT
Peaches Geldof has launched a blistering attack on Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick,
accusing him of emphasising his English accent to win over impressionable
American women.
The wildchild daughter of rocker Bob Geldof was less than impressed after
recently meeting the actor.
And the 20-year-old insists Westwick will have to stop modelling himself on
troubled Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty if he wants to successfully woo the
ladies.
She says, "He acts up to this personification of some sort of Pete Doherty
character - some really wasted English guy with a poet soul and it doesn't
really work. It is a bit like, 'Mate, you're on Gossip Girl and you're in a
sh**ty band.'
"We spoke for a bit and he was quite lecherous. But he was lecherous
to all the girls. He's very small, too. Smaller than me. I'm 5'7" and
I think he must be 5'6". He's ripped (has muscles). But when you're small
and ripped you get into Tom Cruise territory, like a little overgrown gorilla."
Chace Crawford is reportedly furious his name has been attached to the Footloose
remake - after hordes of teenage girls swarmed the set of his show to sing
him the film's theme tune.
The Gossip Girl actor was linked to the part made famous by Kevin Bacon in
the 1984 classic after Zac Efron pulled out in March.
Crawford reportedly impressed casting bosses with a stunning screen test,
and has expressed his desire to move into films.
But after the rumours surrounding his connection to the project was leaked
to the press, the TV hunk has faced constant serenading from his female fans
while filming hit show Gossip Girl in New York.
And TV bosses have been forced to hire extra security for the star after the
musical bombardment - which has led Crawford to seek refuge in his native Texas.
A source tells E! Online, "They had to beef up security because more
girls have been showing up to set every day singing Footloose.
"He couldn't take it anymore, so he's leaving town tomorrow."
Baron Cohen Film Mocks Madonna
3 April 2009 5:15 AM, PDT
Funnyman Sacha Baron Cohen has taken aim at Madonna and Angelina Jolie in his
latest controversial movie.
The British star released a trailer on Friday for forthcoming film Bruno:
Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males
Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.
The movie tells the story of an outrageous gay Austrian fashion correspondent
hoping to make it big in Hollywood.
And one scene is sure to infuriate Jolie and Madonna - with Baron Cohen taking
a swipe at both stars over their adoption of foreign children.
The actor collects an African baby out of a box on an airport baggage carousel
before turning to the camera and saying, "Angelina's got one, Madonna's
got one, now Bruno's got one."
Madonna adopted Malawian child David Banda in 2006 while Jolie has three adopted
children from varying countries.
Baron Cohen's new film follows 2006 hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America
for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and looks set to be just as
controversial.
The Borat picture was heavily criticised by officials in Kazakhstan who accused
Baron Cohen of portraying the country in a negative light.
The actor and movie bosses were also threatened with legal action from disgruntled
members of the public who alleged they were manipulated into participating
in the film.

McConaughey Does His Business On The Road
3 April 2009 12:50 AM, PDT
Matthew McConaughey does his best business on the road - from the back of his
Airstream trailer.
The movie star insists modern technology allows him to head off on his travels
around America without hampering his acting career.
He tells the news issue of America's Men's Journal magazine, "I can communicate
just as well from the Airstream, run everything right there. I can do it better.
My thoughts are better when I'm on the road. I'm more creative.
"I can get to anyone at anytime - if I need to meet someone... 'Well,
here's where I am. I'm going east coming up here out of Idaho. I'll be in Missoula
in about five hours. Why don't you fly up to Missoula, I'll pick you up, and
we'll drive east from there, we'll do our thing on the road, and I'll drop
you off at the next airport.'
Diesel Defied Walker's Advice To Help Deliver Daughter
3 April 2009 12:50 AM, PDT
Vin Diesel is thankful he ignored his Fast & Furious co-star Paul Walker's
advice about avoiding the delivery room when his girlfriend went into labour
- because witnessing his child's birth was "priceless".
Diesel and his model girlfriend Paloma Jimenez welcomed a daughter exactly
one year ago on Thursday, and the action man was on hand to assist in the tot's
birth.
But Diesel reveals he only stepped into the delivery room after choosing to
defy Walker's tips - and he's overjoyed he did.
He says, "I didn't tell anybody (about the birth). I didn't want cameras
around us I wanted it to be as natural as possible. The only person I told
was Paul Walker. And I said to Paul, 'Should I be in the delivery room?' and
he says, 'You know, don't do it, you can't stomach it.'
"(But) it's the best thing you'll ever do in your life and, with that
confidence, I marched into the delivery room and did everything but literally
pull her out. I cut the umbilical cord. I was more present than I could've
ever dreamed of (being) but the bonding that that allowed for with my daughter
is priceless."
Efron Jealous Of DiCaprio's Success
3 April 2009 12:50 AM, PDT
Zac Efron had mixed feelings when he met his idol Leonardo DiCaprio - because
he was so jealous of the star growing up.
The High School Musical actor came face to face with his fellow Hollywood
hunk in November last year and the pair struck up a close bond after attending
a basketball game in Los Angeles together.
But Efron admits he resented the attention the Titanic star received from
girls at his school.
He says, "Leo, for me, was the first time I ever recognised fame. I was
in fifth grade when he was literally on every magazine cover for Titanic and
all the girls had these Tigerbeat magazines and I'd say, 'Dude, what's so great
about this kid?'
"I was jealous. I mean, you couldn't help but hate this guy. And now,
to some degree, I've made it and I'm going through the same thing."

O'Donnell To Lunch With Jones For Charity
2 April 2009 6:30 PM, PDT
Actress and U.S. TV personality Rosie O'Donnell is to dine with the woman she
once called "delusional" on television in a bid to raise charity
cash.
The former chat show host will host a luncheon with Star Jones, the TV lawyer
she replaced on magazine show The View.
The off couple is auctioning off a lunch date in New York City to benefit
the Figure Skating in Harlem Skating with the Stars Gala.
O'Donnell hit the headlines in 2006 when she poked fun at Jones after she
told fans she lost excessive weight through exercise and diet alone.
Jones later admitted she underwent gastric bypass surgery to achieve a new
trim look.
UsMagazine.com reports the highest bidder at the auction and a guest will
be able to ask Jones and O'Donnell any questions they want during the lunch
date.
Cage Appreciates His Fans
2 April 2009 6:30 PM, PDT
Nicolas Cage has invited fans to approach him when he's out and about with
his family - because he wants to teach his kids to appreciate the people
who helped to make him a rich movie star.
While many Hollywood stars shy away from the public, Cage insists on behaving
politely and graciously when he meets with fans.
He explains, "I let my kids know that the people we meet, and who say,
'Hi', they make it possible for us to live our lives and to eat. So we have
to be thankful and be positive when we meet them, and that's important for
people in my line of work. Let's be happy about these people... be thankful
for them."

The launch of British model Kate Moss' fashion line in New York drew a star-studded
crowd, with Jennifer Lopez and Jennifer Hudson attending a dinner in honour
of the beauty.
Moss has a hugely successful range at British chain Topshop - and the franchise
opened its first U.S. store in the Big Apple on Thursday.
And billionaire owner Sir Philip Green threw a lavish dinner to celebrate
on Wednesday night, inviting Hudson and Lopez, as well as her husband Marc
Anthony, to join in the fun.
The Spotlight singer delighted guests at the party by performing.
Deschanel Annoyed At Perry Likeness
2 April 2009 6:30 PM, PDT
Actress Zooey Deschanel is sick of people mistaking her for pop sensation Katy
Perry.
The pair share an uncanny resemblance and fans continually get the two muddled
up.
But the Yes Man star has had enough of the comparisons and is desperate to
distance herself from the singer.
She tells MTV.com, "It's a little bit annoying, to be totally blunt.
The only similarity that we have is that we look a little bit alike. I have
met her before. She seems like a nice person. I'm happy that she's famous enough
now that she's not going out and being mistaken for me.
"I used to get, 'I heard you were out at such-and-such club drinking
whiskey!' (when) I was at home watching TV. I think we lead very different
lives. At some point I feel like this will stop being a thing. I like the way
my life goes. It's sort of strange to be associated with someone that's doing
such different stuff than me. It's weird."

2 April 2009 6:30 PM, PDT
Jason Priestley is refusing to rule out an acting comeback in the new Beverly
Hills, 90210 spin-off, insisting he would "never say never".
The actor - part of the cast of the hit 90s teen show - is returning to direct
an episode of new drama 90210, after declining the chance to reprise his character
Brandon Walsh.
He explains, "They approached me with a couple of opportunities, and
there was nothing that made sense for Brandon to be there. I thought it made
more sense for me to come as a director."
But he hints Brandon could return in the future: "I learned long ago
never to say never."
Rogen Unimpressed With Ford/Flockhart Engagement
2 April 2009 6:30 PM, PDT
Seth Rogen is unhappy with reports Harrison Ford is engaged to Calista Flockhart
- because it puts the funnyman under more pressure to propose to his long-term
love.
The Knocked Up star admits he has always cited Ford and Flockhart's unwedded
bliss as the perfect reason not to ask writer Lauren Miller to marry him after
dating her for four years.
But the Indiana Jones actor reportedly proposed to Flockhart on St. Valentine's
Day after dating the actress for more than seven years - and now Rogen is running
out of excuses to put off marriage.
He tells Us Weekly magazine, "They were my couple. I was like, 'They're
not engaged, they are just happy to be together'.
"Now, if Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn get engaged, I'm f**ked."
Rogen reveals he will pop the question if that day ever comes: "That
will be when it happens."

but he reportedly left the clinic on Wednesday after delivering a 'dirty' drugs
test.
And now Redmond O'Neal has been ordered to face a Los Angeles judge next week,
according to RadarOnline.com.
Last month he pleaded not guilty to drug possession charges.
